Mrs. Malloy Room 203

image003Megan Malloy grew up in Bloomington/Normal, IL. She received her bachelor’s degree in advertising from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005, graduating with highest honors. After working at a pharmaceutical advertising agency for 3 years in Chicago, she decided she wanted to go back to school to become a teacher. She graduated with her master’s in elementary education in 2008 from Loyola University in Chicago. She student taught in second grade at Burley Elementary, was a teacher’s assistant for 3 weeks at Trumbull Elementary in the early childhood special education classroom, and then started in the first grade position at Hamilton in September of 2009. During the summer of 2010, Megan completed the State of Illinois Gifted Education Seminar. Megan loves teaching at Hamilton and is so happy she made the decision to change careers!
Megan married her husband, Dan, in 2008 and their daughter, Gia, was born in December of 2010. When Megan is not teaching, she enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as running, reading, and shopping.

Our Chicago field trip was so much fun!  We braved the cold on the top of the double decker bus to see all the great sites in the city and bring to life everything that we had studied.  Students loved the deep dish pizza!  Ask your child to tell you more about it!  Check out the weekly newsletter link above to see what else we did in the classroom this week.

We had a great first week back from spring break in Room 203!  Students are excited about our upcoming Chicago field trip next Friday.  Please make sure the permission slip is signed and returned by Monday.  Also, please make sure you’ve signed up for a time to meet with me for parent teacher conferences next Wednesday, 4/18.  I have a lot of great news to report and am looking forward to meeting with you!  Check out the weekly newsletter for details of our week in the classroom.

As a reminder, the Chicago research assignment is due on Monday, 3/26.  Also, plese note that March reading logs and homework calendars will be due next Friday, 3/30.  The April log and calendar will come home next Friday as well.  Completing activities from those two items will be the only spring break assignment.  Check out the newsletter to see what we did in the classroom this week!

We started something new this week in class called contracts for a change of pace from literacy centers.  Students worked really hard on their activities and seemed to enjoy doing them.  Students also excelled while reading their “just right” books.  Ask your child to tell you more details about contracts!  Don’t forget to check out the weekly newsletter to see what else we were up to in the classroom!

Happy March!  Hopefully Spring is right around the corner!  Students were given a sight word test this week and their results were sent home on Thursday.  Any words that they missed were circled in green, so please continue to practice those at home.  To see what we did in the classroom this week, check out the weekly newsletter.

Students had a wonderful time on our field trip and loved the play, How to Survive a Fairy Tale.  It brought together everything we’ve learned about fairy tales!  Thank you to the parents who joined us.  Also, a big thank you to Sarah Makela (Oliver’s mom), who put together bulletin boards of pictures of the students in action, which are now hanging in the classroom.  Come check them out!  And don’t forget to check out the weekly newsletter!

Students did a great job on their first in-class group project about fairy tales!  After the presentations, students pointed out that working together and getting along was one of the most important things for a successful end result.  Great thinking, 203!  For more details on our week, check out the weekly newsletter.

We started our unit on fairy tales this week and the students are very excited about them!  Next week, we will be completing an in-class group project about fairy tales.  To see the assignment and the rubric, click here.  We will end our fairy tales unit with a field trip to see the performance of How to Survive a Fairy Tale.  Make sure you turn in the permission slip and $7 fee by Tuesday!  As always, don’t forget to check out the weekly newsletter!

We already have the new listening center up and running! The students used the iPods for the first time during centers this week.  It’s going to take some practice, but they are already doing a great job getting the hang of using them.  The students are so excited, there is a waiting list to use them during free choice time! Hooray! The Donors Choose grant for a new listening center has been funded.  Room 203 will soon be the proud owner of 4 iPod Nanos for students to use at the listening center in the classroom!  Thanks to those who helped fund the project.  The students are super excited.  Stay tuned for updates on the new materials.  For details of our week in the classroom, check out the weekly newsletter!

Have you visited the classroom lately?  Our published stories are on our writer’s wall.  Our group plant projects are up on the bulletin board.  The Smart Board Center is officially open.  Ten students published spooky stories, which are hanging outside the room.   There are lots of great things going on in Room 203.  Stop by and see them if you have time!  Check out the weekly newsletter for more details on our week!

Another great week in Room 203!  We did a lot of turning and talking to neighbors about our thoughts as well as produced two different group projects: one using this week’s vocabulary words and the other making collages with the short a sound!  Come visit the bulletin board outside the room to check out the collages.  For more details about our week, check out the weekly newsletter!!
