We completed the second “Storytown” reader and the children are now discussing and reflecting on the stories in the last theme, “Seek and Find”. They are making connections between what they have read and their own lives or things they know about the world around them.
Our next reading unit is about mysteries. Children become very curious and engaged as they read mysteries. It keeps them thinking, as they accumulate information and apply their logical reasoning skills, trying to solve the mystery. Assignments attached to the stories will keep the children on track as they read. Each child will bring his or her book home nightly, starting on Monday, and will be expected to bring it back to school the following day.
In Math, the class gained a greater understanding of 3-dimensional shapes by creating them using templates which they had to cut, fold and tape together. They also wrote riddles about the shapes and exchanged them with their classmates for a guessing game.
After a fun-filled two weeks , our ducklings, Lemon, Midnight and Twilight, will be headed to the farm on Friday. We will be sad to see them leave but we have learned so much by observing them and comparing them to the chicks. We can scarcely believe how big and strong they are now .
I really enjoyed seeing so many Moms and Grandmothers at school last week. It was fun for the children to recite their poems to all of you. I hope you had a well-deserved, wonderful Mother’s Day.
Have a good weekend.

What a surprise!!!! We were greeted by 2 baby ducklings on Friday morning as well as a third one which hatched later on. They were 4 days early. Needless to say eggcitement ruled the day. The children and I and just about everyone else at Hamilton were won over by these darling little ducks. It was so interesting to see how they developed throughout the day. We are looking forward to what Monday might bring.
The children enjoyed our trip to the Shedd Aquarium. They had a class about adaptations which animals have made in order to survive in icy climates. The students did experiments with “blubber” and feathers which helped them understand the concept of adaptations. They also saw a dolphin and whale training show and toured the Wild Reef exhibit. Each child received a free family pass to the Shedd for a future visit. Many thanks to our parent chaperones who were so helpful.
During Inclusion Week, the children wore an inclusion button which was designed by a third grade student. On Wednesday, they attended an assembly about autism. Throughout the week, I have been reading stories to the class about life situations which deal with being inclusive. We have been discussing how to be inclusive and why it is important.
In Math. we worked on finding the area of shapes using geoboards . Next week, we will be studying 3-dimensioanl shapes.
Dibels testing has started and will continue throughout May.
We are looking forward to celebrating our Moms and Grandmothers on Thursday morning, May 10th . Come and meet our ducklings.
Have a good weekend.

The second graders had a wide variety of interesting learning activities this week. On Monday, we started our celebration of Earth Week by making our own ice cream which the children said was delicious. We did this as part of a program brought to Hamilton by IBM Coporation. The class also listened to “The Lorax” and discussed the important message that Dr. Seuss was sending his readers about saving our natural resources .We increased our awareness throughout the week about the necessity of recycling, reducing and reusing. We also planted sunflower seeds . So our room is abuzz with nature and all its beauty.
We have been following the progress of our duck eggs. So far they are thriving. In about 10 days we should see the ducklings starting to hatch.
On Thursday, the class made their own fossils in art class after having read about rocks and fossils last week.
We culminated Earth Week with a great field trip to The Grove. The children were able to walk the trails observing the pond, wetland, prairie and forest habitats on the property. They dug in the ground and found insects, and worms . They became familiar with some of the plant life including poison ivy which we all avoided. The class enjoyed seeing and touching some of the live animals which are native to our area . Many thanks to our parent chaperones who were so helpful.
Next week on May 1st we are going to the Shedd Aquarium. Lunch will be provided.
Have a good weekend.

The children and I really enjoyed hearing about and seeing Flat Stanley’s (Sarah’s) Spring vacation adventures. They traveled to Mexico, Florida, Arizona, Indiana, and Texas. They visited with friends and family and had a great time at the zoo and the Shedd Aquarium. They stayed home and played games, got haircuts, went to church, attended parties, worked in the yard ,saw movies, and read books. Horseback riding, swimmimg, soccer and visiting museums were a part of the fun. As you can see , our friend had a great time. I hope all of you did, too.
This week ,in the computer lab, the class started working on a program which emphasizes learning keyboard skills. They really enjoyed it. This will be an ongoing activity for them.
There was a lot of “egg-citement” in our class this week when we received 18 duck eggs and an incubator. We are learning about the day-by-day development of the duckling embryos and making sure that they are cared for properly by turning them , keeping the temperature regulated and misting them. In about 23 days we will see them hatching. We can hardly wait!!!
A few reminders:
Book Fair - April 11-18
Family Night – April 17th 5:30 - 7:30

This week we worked on writing How-To stories. The children chose their own topics to describe, making sure that their directions were in order and clearly stated. We finished the week by writing about “How- To Blow A Bubble.” Each child had his or her own piece of bubble gum to chew while explaining the process involved. They came to realize that if you leave off an important step, things don’t turn out as planned.
In Math, the children have been exploring geometry by using pattern blocks, making drawings and visualizing shapes. They are learning how to move shapes in different ways such as turning, flipping and sliding. We will soon be investigating symmetry.
Our Science study focused on rolling objects – wheels, cups and spheres. The class made cardboard ramps and investigated wheels of different sizes on axles as well as the movement of paper cups of two sizes. We also made marble runways to make marbles do tricks.
We worked in the computer lab to find information about specific women in history. The children did a nice job of fact finding and will share their reports with the class.
Finally, your child is bringing home a guest, Flat Stanley, for Spring vacation. He is a character in a story we read at school. Each student has been asked to report on Flat Stanley’s spring adventures by creating a scrapbbook page telling where he went with all of you, and what he did. The children have been encouraged to include photos of Stanley, post cards and illustrations. I hope that everyone welcomes Flat Stanley and has a great time with him.
Whether you will be near or far away, I wish you a wonderful Spring vacation.
March 23, 2012
We welcomed Spring as we took a walk around the school and observed the signs of the season. The Hamilton garden provided us with many opportunities to see Spring at work.
The children read a story about a town that was planning a new park. We started thinking about the different areas we would like to have in a park and then created our own parks . The children named their parks and made posters encouraging people to visit their parks. They had some very creaive ideas as future city planners.
We are finishing our study of fractions in Math. The children are bringing home some fraction cards with which they can play Fraction War and Fraction Concentration. It’s great practice and a lot of fun.
This week in science we created twirlers which rotate by air resistance. The children immediately made a connection with the maple seeds they have seen falling in autumn. We learned that differences in design can affect the rotational motion of spinning objects. The next time you are in a toy store, take some time to look for spinning toys.
Have a good weekend.
March 15, 2012
The last two weeks the class focused on reading nonfiction selections. They learned facts about the lives of bees in ”The Bee”. The story, “Watching in the Wild”, introduced them to Jane Goodall, a famous scientist, who observed chimpanzees in the wild. As extensions of our reading, the children drew and labeled diagrams, created charts to organize information, filled in fact finders and wrote and illustrated booklets to share what they have learned. They were highly interested and motivated in learning about these subjects.
In our new math unit, the children will be working with fractions. They will encounter fractions in different situations by folding paper rectangles to represent fractions, solving fraction puzzles, covering shapes with square-inch tiles and playing fraction games. Help your child explore fractions at home while looking through recipes that require fractional amounts and cooking together.
In science , we have been constructing toys that demonstrate spinning. Last week the children made tops from plastic disks and shafts. They experimented in order to find the arrangement of parts that produced the best top. They gained the understanding that speed and weight affect how a top spins. This week we will be zooming as we use disks and string to create zoomers. The class will compare the zoomers with the tops.
Good Luck has been the topic of our writing this week as the children wrote about a lucky day in their lives and about their lucky charms. On Friday we will be celebrating St. Pat’s Day in the room with some traditional treats, stories, and interesting facts about Ireland and the holiday.
I’m pretty sure that everyone considers this amazing weather a bit of good luck. Have a wonderful weekend and GOOD LUCK to all.

This week the children learned to measure the mass of objects in grams using a two- pan balance . They had a great time predicting and comparing the weights of the objects they brought from home.
The class has been studying about different reference sources to help them find information. We looked at a dictionary, a glossary, a thesaurus, an atlas , an encyclopedia, and the Internet . We discussed the purposes of these reference sources and tried to identify which ones we would use to accomplish certain tasks. The children will practice using all of them in the months to come.
Book orders are due on February 7th.
Have a good weekend.
January27,2012
In our first science lesson on balance, the children balanced a cardboard cutout of a crayfish on their fingertips. After finding the balance point, they were challenged to balance the crayfish on its edge, its tail , and its nose, using clothespins as counterweights. We discussed our observations on why the weights helped us balance the crayfish. In the weeks to come, encourage your child to notice the ways in which we need to use balance in our everyday lives.
The class continues to work on their writing skills as they write their stories around the settings and characters they have created. They have given their main characters a problem which needs to be solved and now they need to come up with some possible solutions to that problem. Soon we will put all the story elements together like the pieces of a puzzle.
Next week , the second grade students will take the mid-year Scantron tests in Science, Reading and Math.
There is no school for students next Friday, February 3rd.

This week we started our second Storytown reader. The theme title is “Dream Big,” and the stories have to do with imagination and creativity. We have been concentrating on the importance of the setting in the stories we read. The children practiced looking for word and picture clues in a variety of books to help them determine the settings. Now our young authors are trying their hands at creating interesting and imaginative settings for their own stories. They have been working on the I Pads as well as using paper and pencil to do this project. When they complete their settings , they will add the other story elements.
The children have been building three-dimensional models with connecting cubes in math. They develop ways to compare, contrast, and sort their cube models. They also develop cube model plans on paper (blueprints) to represent their three-dimensional structures. This week they practiced building each other’s models from the plans they were given. Then they found the volume of the cube model by counting the number of cubes. This is challenging but also a lot of fun.
We will be writing some winter-related poetry in the week to come. All we need to do is look out the window for inspiration. Also, I see some lessons about snowflakes in our future.
Our new science unit is about balancing and weighing. It is filled with great opportunities for hands on learning. In the beginning lessons , we will examine the variables that affect balance.

This week the children learned about realistic fiction as we read “Henry and Mudge”. They read the story with a buddy and as a Readers’ Theater, during which each student took the part of a specific character or the narrator. Our focus was identifying the main idea and details of this story and others . At the beginning of each week, you receive a Home-School Connection letter which has some really good suggestions for reading and writing activities that go along with each lesson.
We had a great time making and flying parachutes . What better way to learn about air resistance than to watch our parachutes float from the second floor to the basement. The class also had a lesson in air pressure and what it can do.
In Math, we collected and analyzed data about our classmates’ favorite sandwiches . Then we practiced graphing the information. Activities such as these help children connect math to real life events. We continue to work on multiple solutions to problem-solnving.
Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to accompany us on our field trip. As of today, I have enough chaperones for the trip.
Reminder: Please send your Walk-a-Thon donations to school. We still need to meet our goal.
Have a great weekend .

Dear Parents,
Each month you will be receiving a Scholastic Book order form. This is a great opportunity to expand your child’s personal library and as a bonus the class will receive free books due to your orders. If you choose to purchase books, please fill out the form and send it back to school by September 22nd with either cash or a check made out to Scholastic Book Club.
Thank you!
Mrs. Shifrin
