Greetings! My name is Carly Jugenitz, and I am a certified teacher with a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from DePaul University. I have taught in Chicago Public Schools for five years as a fourth grade teacher. Beginning the 2011-2012 school year, I will be teaching students in the 2nd/3rd grade Comprehensive Gifted Program (CGP) at Hamilton. I am an avid user and proponent of technology in education, and I enjoy integrating technology into teaching and learning. I have used a Smart Board to enhance teaching and learning for the past 4 years and enjoy encouraging students to use technology creatively to supplement their learning and understanding of concepts.
This year I will be working closely with Karla McReynolds and the Office of Academic Enhancement to develop and implement a rigorous theme-based curriculum. I will be attending professional development throughout the year in order to stay up to date with the best teaching practices in gifted education. I am looking forward to a great school year with my students and their families!

I would like to thank everyone who helped make my Donor’s Choose grant a reality with their generousity. We cannot wait to start using our new iPods in class!
As the school year rolls on we continue to learn as much as we can fit into the schoolday. This week we celebrated African American History Month by reading a historical fiction story about the Underground Railroad, “Running for Freedom.” We also enjoyed our time with visiting artist, Tim Nickodemus. We are learning about many artists who have impacted the world of art by incorporating ‘motion’ into their creations. Students are currentlty building kinetic scultures in small groups. We will showcase all student work in a gallery walk as a culminating activity to this unit, details to come.
Have a great three day weekend, please be sure your student is reading at least 20 minutes at home each day!

It is hard to believe that we are already half way through the school year. Second quarter report cards went home on Wednesday, please return them with a parent signature or send a note stating you recieved the report card. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, I am happy to meet with you after school to discuss these.
In class we are continuing our science unit on magnetic force. Students have been exploring this first hand with many hands on explorations. Next wee
Reminder: Students do not have classes tomorrow because it is a staff development day.
January News
In class this week students researched and discussed events surrounding the upcoming Presidential election. They created ad campaign posters for their top candidates. In language arts we have been studying tall tales and reading classic examples as well as lesser known tall tales by modern authors like Steven Kellogg. Students will be writing their own tall tales and publishing them in the upcoming weeks. In math we have continued to study place value and multiplication. Next week we will be taking the unit test and begining the next unit of study on fractions and decimals. Magnetism is what we are learning about in science and it is fun to see students so excited about the topic.
Reminders:
Scantron testing will take place the week of January 23rd. It is important that students come to school on time everyday and well rested for these tests.

What a busy and exciting week before winter break! This week students were busy working on their culminating projects on The Great Migration and the influence of blues and jazz music in Chicago. Students wrote their own blues song and as a class we compiled a book of these. In addition students worked in small groups to create poster/murals of all they learned over the course of the past month. We continued to study place value in math up to the millions, after winter break some students will also be introduced to decimal place value.
I hope everyone has a safe and healthy break and I look forward to seeing you in the New Year!

Today we took a field trip to the Shedd Aquarium. We were able to see many great exhibits including Wild Reef, Jellies, Oceanarium Christmas Show and we participated in a hands-on exploration about the Amazon. We learned about animal adaptions, brainstormed/sketched ideas for possible adaptions for feet of birds who live in the Amazon, and then built our predictions out of clay and tested them in a pool of water. All in all it was a great day, I can tell my students have learned a lot leading up to this trip and that their knowledge grew from what they experienced today. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped make this trip possible!

This week students presented their planet projects to the class. I was very impressed with the effort that students put into these projects as well as the information they learned through their research. Students chose to do a variety of final products including posters, shadow boxes, sculptures, models, and movies. I have included some sample work below.
On Friday we enjoyed our Popcorn/Movie Party as a reward for our classes phenomenal fundraising efforts for Hamilton’s annual Walk-a-thon. Great job 205! Have a safe and healthy weekend!

This week in class students presented their final projects for the novel, “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.” In math we are continuing to explore multiplication through arrays and other strategies, hopefully your child is practicing their multiplication at home. In science we learned about, and modeled, the lunar cycle and began making our own planet Earth to use as we continue our space unit in science. As a continuation of this unit, students will be completing a “Planet Project” at home. The information went home today with assignment requirements, due date and their assigned planet. Please look for this information in their red folder.
Please check out the links I included below. They are great for students who want to practice their math and vocabulary at home.

This week we finished our first novel study on “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.” Students seemed to really enjoy the characters in this book and many have begun to read the books that follow in the series, “Fudge-a-mania,” “Superfudge” and “Sheila the Great.” Next week students will be working on the culmanating project for this chapter book. Look for the assignment with Tuesday’s homework. We also finished unit 2 in math and will take the test next Tuesday and Wednesday.
Our class did a FANTASTIC job raising money for the Walkathon although we are still waiting for a final number. The walkathon will be next Wednesday on October 12th. Also, next week is spirit week, please check your child’s Friday Folder (red folder) for the handout with the daily spirit themes.
Have a great weekend and enjoy your Columbus Day.

This week students presented their “All About Me” Shoebox Projects in class. I was extremely impressed with the amount of time and effort students put into creating their shoebox andpreparing for their oral presentations. I also was pleased to see such a large parent turn out for the presentations. It is so nice to have a community of students learners who are supported and encouraged at home. I look forward to posting pictures of some students work very soon. I hope everyone enjoys their weekend!
Reminder: Students will be taking Scantron tests in reading, math and science next week beginning on Monday. Please make sure your child comes to school well-rested andprepared to test.
